The Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) was established in 1920 and produces scientific knowledge on Greek Agriculture and Econom. The University has 41 fully equipped laboratories and consists of seven faculties. Its considerable research activity is funded by the EU and various international and national organizations and covers the areas of food quality and safety, reasonable usage of water resources, biological farming, the use of alternative energy sources, applications of biotechnology in agriculture etc. The Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology of Foods (LMBF) of AUA, was established in 1994 and the main research activities are focussed on predictive modeling and risk assessment, food spoilage, foodborne pathogens.

AUA @ promise

Dr. Stavros G. Manios, Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), Greece:

During this 3-year PROMISE journey, I was given the opportunity to interact with the elite class of European food scientists and exchange useful scientific ideas. My enrollment in Work Packages 1 and 2 was the vehicle to learn and apply new techniques of phenotypic and genotypic characterization of foodborne pathogens. As an outcome, the project highlighted the significance of microbial risks from incoming foods to EU-countries and revealed potential scenarios of contamination transfer in different dairy plants. Eventually, PROMISE findings have pinpointed new “horizons” of novel scientific research.
